One frequently finds natural objects such as rocks, trees, caves and waterfalls as the object of veneration. These may be at or near a shrine, or completely separate sacred sites. Here is a fairly elaborate altar and canopy erected over a stone whose power is thought to enhance fertility. Near Kamigamo Shrine, Kyoto.
